In a Nutshell…
Triple Sustain Solutions is a business that presents a way to user test transportation infrastructure before it is built.
The proposal contains a systems design that employs extended reality technology in an empirical setting to produce quantitative results measuring the social, environmental and economic sustainability of various infrastructure designs.

A brief overview
One of the key steps in the industrial design process is user testing to ensure market viability. If we do this with our products, why not apply the same concept to our roads?
Triple Sustain Solutions could make this possible, allowing us to design better infrastructure.
Case Study: I-81 Syracuse
The controversial highway that runs through Syracuse, NY was a piece of infrastructure I interacted with everyday for 5 years.
Plans to improve it were circulating but no one could make a final decision. This project was devised as a method of incorporating public opinion in infrastructure development to create tried and true solutions.
TSS Protocol
The diagram on the left depicts the general systems design at the core of Triple Sustain Solutions. The blueprint below visualizes the space the business might operate in.
Using I-81 lets go over how it might actually work.
Cognitive Load as a Metric for Social Sustainability
Pictured on the right are Tobii eye tracking glasses, which use eye tracking to measure cognitive load. When cognitive load is high, it means that users are extending more effort on a given task.
In this case, it can reveal pain points in the simulated infrastructure and allow designers to make improvements.
TSS as a Business
How could this be turned into a profitable business? Who would we work with? Who could we help?
Design Process
If you made it this far, you are probably a fellow designer, and you know that process is everything. Below are some images of depicting the work that went into this project.
Moving Forward…
As one of my interviewees said, “you could work on this project for 5 years and still probably have details to flesh out.”
Simulation technology is already changing at a rapid rate. But work on this project will continue. Someday TSS protocol will become a norm for the industry to ensure infrastructure is designed with social sustianability in mind.
